Citizenship ceremonies mark the beginning of life as a British Citizens for hundreds of immigrants every week.
Under the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002, successful
applicants are required to swear an oath of allegiance to the Crown and to make a pledge to uphold the laws and values of the UK.

Participants at the ceremonies of each of the London boroughs reflect the vast variety of races and cultures that make up this city. These photographs are the beginning of a journey that aims to put a face to the word 'immigration' and at the same time asks ' who' and 'what' is Britain today?

From the Citizenship oath:
'To be a British citizen means that you should show tolerance and respect for others'
'Please repeat (...) I will give my loyalty to the UK and respect its rights and freedoms. I will uphold its democratic values. I will observe its laws faithfully and fulfill my duties and obligations as a British citizen.' (...)
'You have made a pledge that you will be a faithful subject to the Sovereign and a true loyal citizen of the UK. May you find your lives enriched and may you enrich the lives of others in your community.'
